At UNLOCKED: Escape Room, all of our themes are family-friendly with no horror elements, but we do enjoy a good scary escape room once in a while. Cross Roads Escape Games – The Hex Room

You can’t really have a list of scary escape rooms without including Cross Roads. CREG has been one of the major innovators in the escape room industry with their award-winning game The Hex Room. You start off split up in different rooms, each of you “assigned” to be a specific B-movie horror character trope. You get to really get immersed in their beautiful set design and fun, unique surprises in addition to solving puzzles.

Scary Escape Rooms in Orange County - EscapeX

EscapeX – The Attic

Just the name itself brings some creep factor up, doesn’t it? “The Attic” is one of those memorable games where you kind of forget you are in an escape room and really feel like you’re going through someone’s attic… except it’s creepy. There’s always that feeling of “who’s watching me” when you play this game, and EscapeX always does well on their presentation of any of their games. The Attic was one of their first games in the current Irvine location, but it still holds up very, very well. Aside from this game, you just can’t go wrong with any of the games that they produce.

Escapade Games – Zoe

Zoe is a one-of-a-kind EXPERIENCE for sure. If you love escape rooms that fully put you in the mindset of a potential victim of a horror movie, this is the one to go. This game is so shocking that we honestly do not remember any of the escape room puzzles we had to do because we were so scared. If you are looking for a TRUE bonding experience, Zoe will not disappoint.

Scary Escape Rooms in Orange County - Mission Escape Games

Mission Escape – The Darkest Hour

The Darkest Hour does a great job at placing you in an environment that doesn’t just feel like an office space redecorated for an escape game experience. The story is the basic premise of a serial killer is coming after you, and you can’t help but feel like you are an active character experiencing the anxiety as you move through this experience.

Scary Escape Rooms in Orange County - Deceptive Games

Deceptive Games – The Butcher

Probably less “scary” and more “creepy, The Butcher places you in yet another serial killer setting but this time there’s just more… gruesomeness all around you. This time, you’re basically stuck in a cabin because your car broke down, the perfect story for an impending horror experience. One of the big pluses for this escape room is that the game allows for up to 10 players, which is a larger group than most other escape rooms allow. This allowed us to hold a larger teambuilding event for our own staff and we had a great time.
Note: Deceptive Games also has a game called 303 Coulrophobia Ln that we haven’t played yet, but from what we’ve heard, it’s another great scary experience game related to…. well, go look up what “coulrophobia” mean =)
